Never Too Late: Founder and Designer of Umasqu Tzachi Nevo Established the Brand at the Age of 51

by JJ Tanaka |2021年07月29日

Age posed no limitation for Tzachi Nevo, who founded the home decor brand Umasqu in 2015 when he was 51 years old. Now, Umasqu is an international brand that has products displayed in companies and houses around the world.

Tzachi was able to speak with ISRAERU on the creative process of Umasqu, his career, and the plans he has in store for the brand.

The Foundation of Umasqu

Tzachi graduated from the Bezalel School of Design 31 years ago. Over the next 25 years, he worked in various fields ranging from media to the culinary industry.

While working in careers other than design, Tzachi constantly had in his mind the dream of creating his own brand. Timing and determination coincided, and Tzachi was able to reignite his dream from design school, founding Umasqu in 2015. With so many experiences from working for over 25 years, Tzachi was more prepared than ever when founding Umasqu.

“I work as more than just a designer for Umasqu, I am also an entrepreneur with 12 employees. My past experiences in media, advertising, and marketing have all supported my brand significantly.”

Because of his expertise in past careers, Tzachi is able to tackle the logistical side of the business just as much as the creative.

As a designer and director, Tzachi also handles the creative vision of Umasqu. Although the products span a wide range of looks, aesthetics, and materials, they all fit a common theme of displaying a face.

“I decided to create designs based on faces because that is one of the closest things people can relate to. Faces make us cry, laugh, and feel all sorts of emotions.”

With this creative philosophy in mind, Tzachi then proceeds with creating the product.

“I first create sketches and then continue the work on my computer. On the computer, I make the shapes more accurate. I then perfect the model to the best of my ability to send it to our laser cutting machine.”

Tzachi continues.

“The laser cutting machine then creates the prototype, which is tested with various colors and materials. Because of this, the Umasqu workhouse looks like a big puzzle factory with so many small pieces that have been added and subtracted from products to complete them.”

Once the right pieces come together to create the final model, they are painted and fixed together and ready to accentuate a new environment.

The Essentials of a Umasqu Product

With close attention to details and their clients, Tzachi and his team have many benchmarks an Umasqu product must meet before finalizing.

“Creating a product is a continuous process in creating something new that is also desired by our customers. There is a fine line between a scary face and an intriguing one, and we are always bringing in new methods and materials to evolve our products.”

This relationship Tzachi has with his customers is a mutually beneficial one, where he is able to expand his horizons as a designer, and the customers are able to see contemporary designs from Tzachi.

As an international brand, Umasqu also has a benchmark ensuring the validity of each product overseas. Understanding that each country has its own unique culture, Tzachi works diligently to study and create palatable decor for the countries and regions he works with.

“There are many cultural factors that influence home decor. Because of this, we create products with influences from different countries and cultures to have a broad range of products, where anyone can find something that will fit in their home.”
